Cardamom Pod shows off vegetarian cuisine at its best. Their move to new premises on the Gold Coast Highway in Broadbeach has brought new life to the cafe, which is going from strength to strength. Dine alfresco overlooking the park on delicious fresh food with vibrant colors and gorgeous presentation. The venue, is bright and airy, offering a choice of dining inside or alfresco overlooking green. The wallpapered flowers remain, as does the tribute to Krishna, albeit more muted, but there’s a classier, less eclectic feel to the restaurant which tells us that Krishna-consciousness has moved into the 21st century!
This is a sister restaurant to The Brickworks Southport and Cardamom Pod in Byron Bay, the latter having enjoyed more than a decade of successful trading.
In a suburb saturated by slick cafés, Cardamom Pod provides an absolutely delicious vegetarian alternative. It dares to be stylishly and philosophically different and has won over many mainstream diners in the process! True to the beliefs of the Hare Krishna proprietors, this delicious food is prepared without eggs, garlic or onion.
As the restaurant prepares to open, steaming trays of food are brought out to the bain-maries: samosas and pakoras, Thai and Indian curries, kofta balls, vegetables, polenta squares, lentil moussaka, crisp innovative salads and yummy desserts headed for the glass display cabinet. As a staff member dishes up the first meal (a tribute to Krishna), he tells me that all food is made fresh daily on the premises. It’s not only organic and vegetarian, but there are vegan and gluten-free options available as well. The bain-marie carries six hot dishes daily, complemented by at least as many salads, all at affordable prices, as well as pre-made sweets in a cool display cabinet.
Mouth-watering desserts, such as strawberry and rhubarb tart with rose kulfi, Mango chia puddings, Raw cherry ripe bars and raw cakes look too good to be healthy! A huge range of Byron Bay teas, including flower blossom teas, is available in a pot large enough to serve two people, and there’s also organic coffee available with your choice of milk.
Our favourite meal at Cardamom Pod, however, is weekend breakfast, where food is made to order. From a Vego Burger to Pancakes their food is vibrantly fresh and exquisitely presented. Eat the colors of the rainbow with Cardamom Pod’s Special Organic Açai Bowl – organic açai with gluten-free macadamia and apricot granola, activated nuts, assorted seeds, buckinis, mango crème and fresh fruit medley. The dish comes with a tropical fruit and cacao ball skewer and super-greens mousse. Accompany your meal with a fresh smoothie. What a brilliant start to the day!
Frankly, this food looks and smells so deliciously tasty and wholesome, especially before the crowds arrived, that we just had to return to try it – the first of many visits! Whether you want a quick salad lunch, an indulgent relaxed weekend breakfast treat, a takeaway container of kofta and rice, a gourmet tea with a friend, or specialist vegetarian cuisine, Cardamom Pod offers something different. It’s a great alternative to the mainstream Broadbeach dining scene.
