There’s discussion about Southport developing its own Chinatown, but as yet dining patrons have some choice of Asian restaurants and grocery shops, albeit that they are geographically scattered. The Ming Mei Supermarket, at the entrance of Figtree Court at the bottom of Australia Fair Shopping Centre, has a large range of Asian foods and cooking ingredients.
There’s a wide range of grocery items in this spacious store, such as packaged foods, sauces and dried goods such as specialist mushrooms, many frozen and refrigerated items such as frozen mock meats, tofu, fresh noodles and other Asian specialties, some of which are hard to find elsewhere. Fresh vegetables include the usual Asian herbs and greens as well as harder to get radish and fresh lotus. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering the prime location.
A hawker stall is situated in one part of the shop fronting out into Figtree Court, serving takeaway street food from the bain-marie as well as fresh pickles, and sweets such as almond, coconut and mango jellies. Various other Asian goods are for sale, even jade plants for good luck!
