Pinky’s Kitchen & Bar

There’s something jolly about Pinky’s; not just the name, but also the spacious, relaxed feel of the place.

Owned by Brayden Condon, the venue that opened as an American diner with a twist of invention has been reborn as a contemporary Australian eatery and we love it! With an eclectic world-influenced menu, this is multicultural Australia in all its glory!

The sun’s rays are barely hitting the front door as we have breakfast, but Chef Allan Hutchinson (ex-Espresso Moto and other Palmie establishments) is on the job, the kitchen opening at 6am, with coffee for beach walkers from 5.30.

Over a Blackboard coffee, we ponder the all-day menu that bridges brekkie and lunch.

What jumps out is a ‘wave your pinky’ quotation from renowned chef Anthony Bourdain featured on the menu:

“Your body is not a temple, it’s an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.”

Mmmm… So how does this play out in the menu?

Bagels, burritos, bowls, bennies and bae rolls…yes, all your favourite dishes are there. But venture past Eggs your way on sourdough ($10) and you’ll find that all the classics have a twist.

House-made granola is joined by blueberry hemp coyo ($13), Smashed avo boasts roasted tomato and chilli cashew cream served with pickled cabbage salad (16), Falafel becomes ‘Pealafel’, and a Lamburger is topped with gruyère and pickles ($19).

My eyes land on the Spicy prawn and mango salad ($22). Seafood for breakfast? Yep, I’m looking at you! There’s never a time of day that I can’t eat seafood, chilli or salad. Put them all together and it’s the perfect ‘anytime’ meal, even if I must share!

Share breakfast? Why not, after all we want to try lots of dishes on the menu anyway!

My foodie friends check out the Bro Burger loaded to the hilt with crispy Korean chicken topped with dribbling jalapeno jack cheddar, a house hash and salad. It’s a monster too big for any mouth, but every part of it is so tasty that after some fancy knifework it somehow disappears between us.

Then of course it’s time for dessert. Even the peanut butter and jelly waffle is not as decadent as it seems. Beneath that pink foam, there’s a whole heap of almond, quinoa and buckwheat goodness going on. The toppings are grape foam and strawberry jelly, peanut praline, pb and mascarpone mousse. Not so bad if I discount the Reese’s choc-peanut butter cup!

To be frank, it’s a great modern menu that masquerades as a ‘bad boy’ but has a good heart. Over 40% of it is vegan-friendly, with lots of gluten-free choices as well, (I later learn that the fryer is completely GF), and there’s a lot of raw material goodness going onto each plate.

Our salad’s a ripper, spicy and packing a punch without being oily, the burger a huge luscious meal and the waffle a tasty, ‘healthyish’ treat.

There’s lots of care and attention to details as well – produce and meat sourced locally, everything made in house, from baked goods such as banana bread, slices and muffins to smoked onions and the BBQ sauce!

If you’re intent on being decadent, you can add a Mimosa or Bloody Mary to your breakfast or a beer to your burger, but when the venue’s hours extend to late afternoon sessions and dinner trading, the fully licensed bar menu will truly come into its own.

Meantime, Mr Bourdain, we’re happy to hedge our bets both ways, enjoying delicious hearty healthy fare that will last the day’s distance. To our good health!
