When it comes to fast food, one of the most nutritious meals you can choose is a poke bowl. Using the best local seasonal ingredients, each bowl is a balanced meal; a base of low GI brown rice or quinoa topped with a rainbow of fresh salad, protein-rich edamame beans, Omega 3-full raw fish, good fat avocado and seaweed.
Lunch choice made, we find one of the coast’s best poke bowls at Raw + Rice opposite the beach in Coolangatta, the perfect place to enjoy a fresh meal. Inside the store, the focus is on the breeze block bar and back-lit menu. Furnishings are minimalist to provide no distractions: Scandi-light timber tables on wheels for ease of access, looking across a foliage-fringed patio to golden sand and surf. The bowls here are the centrepiece.
Founded by Sunshine Coast locals Ben Glass and James Breust, Raw + Rice was first established in their hometown in 2017, followed by Brisbane, before opening the Gold Coast restaurant.
We’re so glad they did, because their flexible menu, packed with fresh, local and sustainable ingredients, gives us one of the best poke bowls on the coast, and a great addition to southern coast dining.
Offering five signature curated bowls based on sustainable seafood (salmon, tuna or white fish), soy tofu or poached free-range chicken, there’s also the option to ‘Build Your Own Bowl’ from the base of brown rice, sushi rice, quinoa or mixed greens adding ingredients from ‘Protein, Freshness, Sauce and Crunch’ to make a rounded bowl.
Several factors make Raw + Rice one of the best tasting poke bowls on the coast: made in front of the customer to order, we can attest to the freshness of ingredients including sashimi grade raw fish, the use of garden fresh herbs, the balance of texture with crunch and good fat added (think bean sprouts, wakame and avocado contrasting with coconut flakes, wasabi peas and toasted sesame seeds), and exceptional made-in-house sauces, making Raw + Rice a top choice.
Philosophically too, Raw + Rice feels grounded in sustainability with ethical sourcing, biodegradable and recyclable packaging speaking loudly about values.
