It’s the pizza parlour with so much more, the new ‘urban’ pizzeria with ‘the lot’ – Urban Woodfire Pizza.
When Darren Bedford decided to establish a family owned and run restaurant at the start of 2017, he put into place the best food preparation techniques he’d learned in his career running fast food restaurants with a fresh twist
“I started this restaurant to make a nice casual place serving fresh casual food in a good environment,” Darren tells us. “We use handmade sauces and do the preparation every day. You can watch us making the pizza. It’s a traditional Italian base with lots of topping, not just ‘dobs of opportunity’.
It’s the range and quality of food at Urban that amazes us on his very extensive and inclusive menu.
Pizza, pasta, wings, ribs, salads and burgers cover most of the menu, with five desserts on the drinks and cocktails menu.
Pizza is a good way to illustrate the menu range, from traditional Margherita to a range of five Grass Eaters (with a choice of activated charcoal, gluten-free and vegan with a dairy-free cheese) or the Burn Your bum Off pizza (containing everything spicy), there’s something for everyone, no matter what their dietary requirement or preference. There’s even a bar where you can create your own pizza: base, protein and vegetables! But be warned: it’s not an easy task with ten different cheeses and close to twenty toppings.
“I wanted to create some products that people couldn’t get anywhere else, for example our Baby Beets and Cheese pizza,” he says.
He’s right. With Urban’s pesto sauce and secret seasonings, mozzarella, baby beetroot, goats cheese, fennel, spinach and walnuts – it’s a vegetarian’s dream! And for more variety, take a trip around the world on a pizza with the Cheeseburger USA, Rock’n Marrocan or Thai-Reffic (sic), all cooked in a wood-fired oven!
We start with a bowl of wings with Darren’s Sweet Carolina crunchy coating and Blue cheese sauce (1/2kg for $12, or $22 per kg). One bite and I decide that they’re some of the best wings I’ve tasted. We look around and there’s wings on every table. Why would you bother to cook them, honestly!
Then, it’s Seafood pizza, the thin crust loaded with lots of seafood and garlic. Delicious!
Darren tells us about some of the specials on offer:
Burger, chips and drink (beer or soft drink) for $15, or Lunch size pizza, chips and drink $15 – Friday and Saturday lunch
50 cent wings on Sundays from 2 – 4pm;
‘All you can eat’ ribs, wings and pizza every Monday in July for only $25 per person. There’s live music on Monday evenings as well. It’s a chance, Darren says, to try the range of pizzas on offer, as well as their wings and ribs.
With some flashy cocktails and beers on tap, it would be too easy to spend a Sunday afternoon with some wings and beer, pizza, Bailey’s panna cotta for dessert and a cocktail. Why not?
